On the marketplace, directly in front of the town hall with its decorative facade is the Luna fountain situated. The old fountain was created by an unknown artist in 1530.
On a pillar one can see the Roman lunar deity Luna. The fountain statue was erected due to an error: In the 16th and 17th-century the Lüneburger believed that the town was a Roman settlement once and its name derived from Luna. But Lüneburg comes from the word 'Hluini' for refuge. Still the lunar deity stayed in Lüneburg. But the figure had to endure some banter. The 62cm large bronze figure was stolen in 1970.
In 1972 the Berlin artist Harald Haacke made a replica.
