A half-timbered house from the 17th-century in Preten, the Storkenkate, is being used as information centre for the stork protection foundation 'The Stork Foundation' today. The foundation's target is: 'A future for the stork... - ...meaning conserve habitat'.
The Storkenkate stands in direct connection with the project 'Sudewiesen' (meadows). From here the project is being managed, scientific work accompanied and visitors welcomed.
The Storkenkate offers you during the summer half-year interesting facts around the white stork and the project 'Sudewiesen'. Observation sites along cycling and hiking paths give exciting insight into the Sudewiesen with its numerous animal and plant species. Guided tours through the marsh area past Heck cattle and wild horses are possible by prior arrangement.
