The village was already first mentioned in 1161 as "Garzelice" in a certificate with the seal of bishop Wilmar. The name points to a Slavic settlement. Several fires devastated the village numerous times, lastly on the 17th of August 1822. To meet the imminent fire hazard the house were built very much apart - the result is a generous designed village road.
The thatched roofs were tiled. The church also suffered during the fires and burned down several times. The Swedes plundered the church in 1675. During the 1st World War it was robbed of its bells due to raw material shortages. Lightning damaged in 1927 the tower and clock. Since 1922 two steel bells toll here and the church owns a Schuke organ since 1928.
