The village name Buckow "Buche" (beech) and testify of a hill overgrown with beeches during the founding time.
Buckow was also mentioned as "Bukowe" in 1161 in a certificate of the chapter in the cathedral Brandenburg. A wonder was to have taken place locally in time immemorial - a health fountain was apparently situated here and "wonder-blood" flowed. Remnants of the in 1343 built "Wunderblutskirche" (wonder-blood church) can still be recognisable at the church's east gable. The church tower was lighted by a big wax candle and served the pilgrims as lighthouse because Buckow used to be an island and could only be reached by boat.
