Barnewitz is also a Slavic foundation because "Born" means pine. The village was first mentioned in 1289. The church, oldest building in the village, was built with granite boulders in the 13th-century and was several times rebuilt in the course of time.

It burned down completely on the 18th of April 1944 and was rebuilt at a smaller scale between 1967 and 1974. The bell from 1662 hangs in a belfry adjacent to the new building because the church only has a small ridge turret. After the 2nd World War the village expanded considerably in size through new settlements.
