Roughly 130 years ago up to 65 metres deep ducts were driven down to win salt. But salt water inflows made further searching operations impossible and only a few years later the operation ceased.
The area is still called Volgershall after the then head Otto Volger, the geologist. As salt wasn't won here the area was used as limestone quarry for the Pieperschen Düngekalkwerke in the 60ties of the 20th-century. The resulting lake is still known as Kalkbruch today - and popular.
The owners of the Kalkbruch Lake don't allow swimming.
