Shipyards, the Deutsche Seereederei and shipping companies are at home here among others.
In the Middle Ages, the Rostock harbour was already an important port of departure for the trade with the Scandinavian countries and the Baltics.
But with the demise of the Hanse League, the harbour also lost its importance.
In the years 1939-1945, the Rostock harbour regained importance - due to the aircraft industry.
During the times of the DDR in 1960, Rostock harbour and overseas port were renamed VEB Seehafen Rostock.
After 1989, the development went in the direction of ferry and cruise port, especially at the harbour in Warnemünde.
A steamboat trip starting in Warnemünde, gives an overview of the harbour from the Baltic Sea and is highly recommended.
The Rostock city harbour is being used as museum's harbour, here some museum's ships are anchored.
For example the Traditionsschiff type Frieden, the steam tugboat Saturn, concrete ship Capella
