Michaelis Monastery

image author: city-map Region Rostock

Built at the end of the 15th-century, the building on the present Michaelis monastery, was then used as home and workplace. A chapel existed.

Years later, a book printing office was constructed, which made Rostock to an important knot of the printing trade in the Baltic Sea area.

After Reformation, the building became accommodation for the students from the university Rostock. It was also served as arsenal, wool and grain warehouse and transformer station.

The building burned completely down during the 2nd World War. The eastern part was rebuilt in the 1950ties and served from then on as community centre for the Protestant-Methodist community.

In 1994, the west wing was rebuilt and has been used since as library for the faculty history by the university Rostock.
