Magical places - great views

The magical place 'schöne Aussichten' (great views) addresses a little pieces of Lüneburger Heide's history in the year 1820. Then the mathematician Karl-Friedrich Gauß (who is by the way known to many people from the ten-Mark note) got the order from the Hanover king to measure the land. Here in the Südheide on the Scharnhorst hill, at the Kirchweg between Eschede and Scharnhorst a stone was set in 1822, which forms the survey point in the grid from the Brocken to the Danish net in southern Holstein.
The terrain itself is not accessible so viewing tower was erected, so the visitor can watch the surveyed landscape from a bird's view. The exact place has been pinpointed on a topographical map.

The artist Wolfgang Jeske planted in the terrain's hollow around a laying eight made of asphalt fragments and as the eight stands for infinity in maths a connection to Gauß` research was created.
A number series made of steel at the nearby pond whose mirror images dance on the water surface are to be in contrast to perfection of Gauß and his calculation.
