The Gothic Katharinen church replaced an older building around 1380, which was donated by the Lüneburg knight Manecke von Estorff in memory of his son who died in a crusade around 1280. The church is still today the patronage church of the family von Estorff as it has been since its founding. The community's territorial expansion is also still unchanged: apart from Embsen other seven villages also belong to the community
The church's external picture is characterised by the free-standing wooden belfry and the thick supporting walls at the nave, which were added later. Inside the vaulted building the unusual layout surprises.
