Around the turn of the century recreation seekers came to the spa hotel 'Kurhotel auf dem Weinberg' mainly from the Hamburg and Hanover region. There is a spring with drinking fountain and medicinal applications were available for holiday makers. Day trips on the water over the Elbe, took place also and there was a shipping line operating between Hamburg-Lauenburg-Dömitz.

By now Hitzacker is state approved climatic health resort. Many hotels have specialised in wellness and beauty and there is a spa area with Kneipp pool and barefoot path.

Hitzacker is location for musical events like the Hitzacker summer music days under the artistic guidance of Dr. Markus Fein or the Hitzacker music week under the artistic guidance of Ludwig Güttler. Hitzacker also has three museums among them the Archaeological Centre Hitzacker with an open-air museum about the Bronze Age.

Wine has been grown on the Weinberg for several centuries. Once a year the grape harvest is celebrated with the reigning wine queen. Hitzacker is involved in different marketing operations like being part of the German half-timbered road, the Lower Saxon asparagus road and partner of the Dutch Oranje Route.
