The community Niederkrüchten forms with the large forest and nature reserve areas, bodies of water and lakes the heart of the nature reserve Maas-Schwalm-Nette. Main villages are Niederkrüchten and Elmpt. The community is located directly at the border to The Netherlands, near the Dutch city of Roermond.

Further nature reserves are:

• Elmpter Bruch - nature reserve- and excursion area with marshland and heather areas, Gagel moors as well as the last juniper heath at the left part of the lower Rhine.
  
  
• Lüsenkamp and Boschbeektal along the border to the Netherlands with more than 200 kilometres well developed hiking and cycling paths.
  
  

For sportive leisure activities there are:

• Nordic Walking Park Elmpter Wald * De Meinweg - with 20 routes and in total with 150 kilometre path network.
  
  
• Riding path network - and overnight accommodation possibilities on riding farms.
  
  
• Harik- and Venekotensee - offer leisure opportunities for water sports.
