Castle Langwedel

The Langwedeler swimming bath, inaugurated in 1964 is situated on historical ground and for this reason called 'Burgbad Langwedel'. Here on the 'Großen Schlossberg', were the main facilities of a castle and residence of the archbishops of Bremen, built by the archbishop Gerhard II in Langwedel around 1222.

In the course of the centuries this castle built as a 'moated castle' was as an important continuously extended. After the 30-year War the castle fell to the Swedes in 1648 and the fortification style altered. In the year 1675 soldiers from Münster allegedly razed the castle to the ground. But according to documented chronicles this is not true. Around 1770 the fortification facilities were still depicted in Hanover maps. The still visible remains were destroyed probably from 1866 onwards, when the estate came to the Prussian kings.

During renovation work at the outdoor pool (2006 / 2007) hidden remains of the former facility were found under the surface and documented by the district archaeology. In connection with this the market town Langwedel constructed an 'archaeological window' in the entrance area of the Burgbad'. Part of the brick foundation wall of the mighty gate facility is visible, which was used to cross over the moat to reach the main castle's courtyard. An information tablet gives interesting connection.

In 2000 in the course of these outdoor swimming pool reconstruction and the archaeological finds a seven-head "Arbeitsgruppe Burg Langwedel" under the leadership of Langwedel's mayor Jürgen Luttmann was founded, which together with the culture association Langwedel, the community, tourism office and interested citizens to process and make the castle's history visible as well as the Amt Langwedel as administration unit. Since 30.05.2008 the depiction of the 'Amt Langwedel' as administration unit in the course of the permanent exhibition at the town hall Langwedel is possible. In addition a castle model was made and is open to the public at the lower town hall vestibule. An exhibition guide tour is possible for groups. (Tel. Dr. W. Ernst 04232-1590). There is castle-exhibition leaflet available for 12,- €.
