Wolfgang Borchert Theatre

The Wolfgang Borchert Theatre is a professional private theatre with its own permanent ensemble, which is being complemented by guests. It was founded on the 29th of December 1956 in Münster and is one of the oldest private theatres in Germany.

The official opening took place as the 'Theater im kleinen Raum' (Theatre in the little room) on the Prinzipalmarkt. In 1958 the theatre moved, with the artist community, into the Münster's main railway station and called itself 'Zimmertheater Münster' from then on.

The renaming in Wolfgang Borchert Theatre, followed at the season 1982/83, in the year 1999 then relocating in the present venue at the Hafenweg in Münster's disused city port.

With the artistic direction taken over by the Colgne director and actor Meinhard Zanger in the season 2006/07, the profile of a literary orientated chamber-play stage was sharpened. A mix of unconventional classic production and contemporary plays characterise the repertoire. On the 31st of August 2006, a second permanent venue [75 seats], the WBT_MAGAZIN, was opened with Wolfgang Lichtenstein's production of HAPPY DAYS by Samuel Beckett. It has room for experimenting. In the season's opening 2007/08, the audience was able to take a seat for the first time to enjoy Shakespeare's HAMLET in comfortable red cinema armchairs on the 23rd of August 2007.
