The community reform in Lower Saxon took place on 1. July!
Incorporation of the communities Borstel, Dauelsen, Eitze, Döhlbergen, Groß Hutbergen, Klein Hutbergen, Hönisch, Scharnhorst and Walle into the town Verden.

Inauguration of the Niedersachsenhalle at the Lindhooper Straße and start-up of the indoor bath at the Saumurplatz.

On the 8. November the first section of the pedestrian zone was opened.

Opening of youth centre.

Extending of pedestrian zone to the Herrlichkeit.

1985
Jubilee celebrations on the occasion of being awarded the market rights, coinage prerogative, customs' and toll rights 1000 years ago. Highlight of the festival year was the day Federal President Dr. Richard von Weizsäcker visited Lower Saxony.

1986
Completion of the river Aller bank trail from Mühlentor to the railway ridge. The continuation between south bridge and Blumenwisch was built in 2002.

1988 - 1992
Extension construction of the town hall at the Ritterstraße and restoration of the old town hall.

1990
Town twinning with the town Havelberg (Saxony-Anhalt) and the town of Warwick/England started.

1993
On the 5. September the memorial for the town's murdered Jewish citizens was inaugurated.
Town twinning with the Polish city Zielona Gora/Grünberg.

1994
346 years garrison town Verden ended.

1996
Verden becomes twin town of the Russian town Bagrationowsk/Prussian-Eylau and the Polish city of Gorowo Ilaweckie/Landsberg/East Prussia.

1997
1. European championship of dressage in Verden

1998 - 1999
Remodelling of the barrack area at the Holzmarkt into a multi-functional culture and event centre with town hall, German Horse Museum, library and shopping centre.

1999
Rural district administration moves into the redeveloped barrack area at the Lindhooper Straße.

2000
Expo 2000 in Hanover. Registered projects in Verden: 'Verden - Zentrum der Tierzucht', 'Holzheizwerk Verden'.

Annual world championship of young dressage horses (5- and 6-years old)
