Uli Borowka Suchtprävention und Suchthilfe e.V.

Ulrich 'Uli' Borowka (born 1962) is a legend, not only with the fans of the SV Werder Bremen. The colourful defender, also called 'the axe', became with the SV Werder 1988 and 1993 German Campion and in 1994 DFB-cup-winner. In 1992, he won with his team the European cup of the cup-winners against the AS Monaco.

After his active career as a football player, Borowka worked as a trainer and is now working in the area of sport marketing.

Uli Borowka is honest and offensive about his alcoholism. This was like a shadow over his successful career and nearly destroyed his life according to him. Uli Borowka sought treatment and has been a recovering alcoholic since 2000.

In 2012, his book 'Volle Pulle – Mein Doppelleben als Fussballprofi und Alkoholiker' (Flat out - My double life as professional footballer and alcoholic), a merciless account of an eventful life. Hard, honest and uncompromising – just as he played. The book received great attention from the public and the media.

It followed the founding of the club 'Uli Borowka Suchtprävention und Suchthilfe e.V.' by Uli Borowka and his wife Claudia. The club's goal is to do prevention work and explain about addiction through publicity work, readings and events. There will be help for the children from affected families and the club sees itself as a port of call for addicted footballers, who have to hide illness in professional sport.
