The sluice group

With the help of the sluice group Meppen, situated at the Dortmund-Ems-canal, ships can overcome the height difference of 7,5m

Both sluice chambers have a width of 12,0m, the length is 165m (big sluice) and 100m for the small sluice. The water requirements are per sluice filling 14.800 m3 resp. 9.000 m3.

To reduce water wastage, for every sluice basin there are two saving basins. These take 50% of the sluice water at the valley sluicing to fill the sluice chambers at the following hill sluicing.

The whole of the canal length has been constructed for the Europe ship (1350t cargo).

The average traffic is 33 ships per day.
