Rantzau Stone

image author: Verlag Temmen

Along the road from Klein Gladebrügge to Traventhal stands an erratic boulder with this carved inscription: 'FRID: Z REX HINRICVS RANZO 1575.' Written in full and in today's spelling it means: 'Frederick the II. Heinrich Rantzau. 1575.'
It is one of the famous Rantzau stones. It was put up in honour of Frederick the II on the occasion of his 15th year reign. And in addition (and most probably the main reason) on the occasion of Heinrich Rantzau's 50th birthday. He lived from 1526 to 1598.

Several different stones were put up by Heinrich Rantzau between 1573 and 1597.
