Today, the palace island in Lake the Rantzau is a popular destination for young and old.

Knightly lodgings
Many years back, in the 12th and 13th-century the island was the seat of the Barmstedt knights. And only in the year 1984, the island was taken over by the town of Barmstedt.

Nature and culture
Lots of green nature is to be found on the island as well as historical attractions. Today the pretty old buildings house a restaurant/café, an art gallery and local museum.

Adventurous eating
If you are fascinated by the adventure antiquity you can enjoy a meal in an original prison cell. And directly next door beyond the moat one can admire an old watermill.
