The unique nature of the Spreewald is a sensitive system, which need special protection. Here around 6000 animal and plant species were verified among them many that are on the red lists of endangered species.

Biosphere reserves are large surfaces, representative sectors of nature and cultivated landscapes that means landscapes that have been decidedly formed by people. They perform a safety function to preserve genre sources as well as animal and plant species, ecosystems and landscapes and a development function to support sustainable economical and human development.

So biosphere reserves are model regions, where exemplary concepts for nature preservation, ecological compatible land usage and economic forms as well as to prevent nature form damage by tourism are implemented.
Main tasks are the research of human-environment-relationship, the ecological environment monitoring and the environment education.
A global net of around 400 biosphere reserves represents all great landscapes of the earth that are recognised by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation).
