Moated Castle in Fuerstlich Drehna II

The village Fürstlich Drehna is characterised by a moated castle, which was built in the 16th-century.

Today, the castle presents itself as a four-winged facility with two mighty round towers and a square tower. The castle is surrounded by a wide moat.

As most of these kind of buildings, the GDR didn't use them for representation purposes and accordingly preserved. First as a holiday retreat, then political party and forestry school. Lastly, it served as a youth working yard for criminal youngsters until 1986.

After that, the building fell into disrepair.

Since 1995, Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH is the owner of the castle ensemble and it was restored, also thanks to the significant engagement of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz. On the 20th of October 2007, the 5-star hotel 'Das Hotel Schloss Fürstlich Drehna' was opened.

The park, was redesigned as a landscaped garden with the help of Peter J. Lenné in 1819. It had suffered in parts, through lignite mining.

The old, majestic individual and groups of trees on expansive lawns, a pavilion and the lake coin the character of the park.

In the newly created park part, a new landscape is being designed on the former open-cast mining land.
