Joint Community Sottrum

image author: Samtgemeinde Sottrum

Through its close proxoimity to the Hanse town Bremen, the local authority Sottrum a has special meaning for short-term recreation in the immediate vicinity as well as holiday and leisure time activities.
All of the 7 member communities have charming, mostly countryside and forestry formed landscapes and the little geest hamlets radiate with their well-kept granges a comfortable rustic charm.
If you are looking for recreation, you will find a wide variety of options, like swimming in the new public heated outdoor pool in Sottrum, riding in all member communities and nature watch in the unspoilt river valley of the Wieste.

In the centre of the joint community, is the church vuillage Sottrum situated, first recorded in 1205. Beside the St.-Georges-church, with its century old tower, the Wümme valley has earned a special mention. It is a peaceful long ranging, on forest and dunes bordering landscape. The area from Everinghausen to Waffensen is especially popular with recreation seekers. Geologically interesting are the high river dunes in the nature reserve Voßberge and at the Grundberg lake. At the wayside between Sottrum and Hellwege is the stud-farm Fährhof, famous for its racing horses. In the little idyllic village of Clüversborstel, an in 1631 built and very well renovated manor in Stuckenborstel is a reminder of the noble family Clüver which reigned over the Sottrum area. There is also the watermill at the Wieste, which was built in 1815, to be found. It has an undershot waterwheel, a technical monument.

South of the Wümme are the forest-rich holiday villages Ahausen and Hellwege, which have a charming landscape and still preserve its rural countryside farming character. Several big half-timbered farmhouses still forming today the village sight. A gem with special charm is the dreamy Ahauser mill. Which was still working a few years ago.

If you love the heathland, the nature reserve Wolfsgrund with its long ranging open heath areas on the south border of Eversen or the neighbourhood around the knights manor Stelle near Hellwege is for you. With a bit of luck, there might be a flock of the white, hornless moorland sheep to be seen. Nearby is, by the way, a small airport where sightseeing flights can be booked.
