The district Pinneberg is situated right in the south of Schleswig-Holstein. It borders onto Hamburg and clockwise further onto the Elbe river and the districts Steinburg, Stormarn and Segeberg.

In comparison of surface the district Pinneberg is with 664 square kilometres Schleswig-Holstein's smallest district. But in population it the largest in the North German county. With nearly 290.000 citizens it has over 10% of Schleswig-Holstein's population.
