Riding describes the human type of movement on the back of an animal. It usually means the riding of a horse but it could be any type of animal that is able to carry a human on its back. The control of the ridden animal is mostly done with horse tack and or special riding aids. In addition the riding animal is often saddled with the most diverse kind of saddles to give the rider a most comfortable and secure seat.Originally a fast travel option; riding has now become in the industrial states an equestrian sport or is used in therapeutic horseback riding. Common are police riding squads as well as military cavalry units for representations for example in Great Britain or France. Used as riding animals are apart from the different horse breeds also donkeys, mules and hinnies, camels (dromedary, Bactrian camel and llama) as well as elephants. The cavalry, also mounted military units, were considered from the ancient world to modern times as dominant army arm as it was fast and agile. Riding skill made it possible for the rider to use the pack animal also as a weapon (so with the horse over the capriole as act of liberation). The cavalry formed the modern equestrian sport, which evolved from teaching methods. Military, as derivation of military riding contest, is since 1912 Olympic discipline.Source: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiten
