One of the most popular destinations for hiking, is in Ibbenbüren, the natural monument 'Dörenther Cliffs' with the legendary rock 'Hockendes Weib' (squatting wife). The Dörenther Cliffs are situated south of Ibbenbüren in the Teutoburger Forest, directly at the supra-regional hiking path 'Hermannsweg'. They are easily reached in 15-20 minutes via the hiking car park Dörenther Klippen (at the B 219). In good weather, the rock landscape offers outstanding views into the Münsterland.
A myth surrounds the well-known rock of the Dörenther Cliffs, the 'Squatting Wife'. It says, that a mother turned to stone to save her children from the nearing floods. 'In the olden days, the floods of the sea often rolled deep into the land towards the hills. A woman lived with her children in a hut at the foot of the hills. When the flood came nearer she gathered her children in her arms and brought them to the hills. To her horror, she saw the water rising further and further. When the water had reached her feet, she squatted and told her children to climb onto her shoulders and started the pray. When she tried to get up, but she had turned into a rock, which protruded out of the floods, carrying the children.'
The 'Dörenther Cliffs' with the Squatting Wife are one of the most popular destinations in Ibbenbüren. Information about hiking paths around the cliffs is available at the
