Development of the market town Langwedel

Market town Langwedel

The over 780-year history of Langwedel is shaped by its location at the old military and trade road which runs from Bremen to the south. It was the only connecting path between the archbishopric Bremen and the bishopric Verden. Along this road the Bremer archbishop Gerhard the second built a castle to secure the border at the Heerstraße. This strategic important castle suffered a changeable fate and was fiercely fought over, especially in the Thirty Year War. Further information about the castle Langwedel is available in our section 'Tourism and Culture'.

By the way the description market town stems from the Middle Ages. It means that Langwedel owns market rights and was allowed to bestow citizens' rights. The bestowal of citizens' rights was usually reserved for towns in the Middle Ages.

Due to the favourable traffic location Langwedel has developed extremely positive not only as a residential community but also for business settlements.
For business, trade, crafts and industry our community is an attractive and innovation promoting location. To promote this local business location an industrial site of ca. 80ha was designated in close proximity to the motorway.
