The castle Neersen was a water castle when built originally. The castle is located immediately adjacent the river Niers, feeding the moat and the river flowed next to the castle until the straightening in the year 1930.

From 1661 until 1669 the medieval water castle was converted by Adrian Wilhelm von Virmond with about two million bricks into a three winged, baroque castle with four corner towers.

In 1970 the castle Neersen was bought by the newly founded city of Willich. In order to use the castle as a town hall the building was renovated and enlarged.

In the framework of the Euroga 2002 the outer facilities were reconstructed according to the images of the 18th century.

The annual highlight are the festivals of Neesen, which have taken place in the outdoor inner courtyard of the castle since 1984.
