'Beer has always been a global drink, whose production and importance has seen development and changes during its long history', says Head of Administration Peter Ottmann. More or less everybody has a relationship with beer and the connected tradition. Along the Lower Rhine, so the Head of Administration, the Gambrinus juice in a form of Alt-beer also has a long tradition - in urban as well as rural areas. Legendary regional breweries like Hensen (Mönchengladbach), Tivoli, Rhenania (both Krefeld), Diebels (Issum) or Bolten (Korschen""broich) still haa a good reputation and are partly still brewed or again brewed. The district Viersen also has among others with Hannen (Willich), Schmitz-Mönk (Anrath), Schlossbräu (Waldniel), Rixen (St. Tönis) or the brewery zum Bären in Grefrath have done their remarkable Alt-beer bit.'

'The distinctive 'Hannen-Fist', 1921 as a symbol of the same-named brewery implemented was the synonym for Alt-beer well into the 80ties.'

Breweries in the district Viersen:
Microbrewery Schmitz Mönk
The only still active brewery in the district Viersen is situated in Willich-Anrath. Brewed and poured is done at the same-named public house: Mönk Alt, Mönk Weizen and also stout ale with the name Mönk Bock twice a year.
