The buildings and facilities were designed by Prof. Heinrich Dathe, who was for many years in charge of the zoo and also responsible for the world wide reputation. At the very expansive, ca 160 ha big park, which has 22,7 km long paths and 2,6 ha big water bodies, one can admire around 5000 animals (ca 1000 species). The animal park has been generously created and is ideal for recreational walks at any time of year. The polar bear needs a special mention with its big swimming pool and artificial ice floes. The pachyderm house with elephants, manatees and rhinos, the Alfred-Brehm-House (predator house), the crocodile0colibri house, giraffe and monkey house as well as the snake-farm are attractions of the animal park.
Not only animals can be admired at the park but also lovely plants among them ca 500 different forms of orchids.
The historical, as museum designed Palace Friedrichsfelde with the historical design of north and south ground floors is open to the public. Concerts take also place here.
Playgrounds and a cafeteria are ideal for rest.
