For centuries, the baking house ('Backes') just had to be there in every village in the Siegerland, as well as in Wittgenstein, as it was one of the most central facilities. It just wasn't only an intense and versatile used, mostly cooperatively run functional building, but also fulfilled an important common function as information and communication centre. The local Heimatvereine and baking house co-operations perform their baking days because they enjoy the common action and happy to allow interested guests a 'look over their shoulders', or, this handled differently in the individual places – give a sample of the freshly baked bread or even, for a small fee a slice of Schanzenbrot respectively a crusty loaf.
