The Zoological Garden lies as a green oasis in the middle of the City-West, adjacent to the train station, which is named after it in the district Tiergarten. Zoo and aquarium presenting the animals in their 'natural habitat'. Berlin visitors should at least reserve half-a-day for the zoo visit. The building started in 1841 when King Friedrich Wilhelm IV gave his pheasants and all animals from the peacock island to the Berlin people for the purpose of setting up a Zoological Garden. It was opened as Germany's first zoo on the 1st of August 1844.
The elephant portal (1899) at the Budapester Straße and the aquarium (1913) are probably the most famous landmarks of the Zoological Garden. The night animals section and the tropical house are other attractions of the zoo.
Today, one can admire circa 15000 animals of 1700 species at the Zoological Garden. Historical animal houses in exotic style are presented on a 15 hectare large surface next to modern high-tech facilities like hippopotamus house and the new seal-penguin facility with its underwater windows. Especially popular with visitors is the feeding of the seals.
The aquarium has with around 6000 animals probably the most species that can be seen on 3 floors in very natural surroundings. A crocodile hall and an insectatrium round the zoo off.
