The park-like facility makes the Krefeld Zoo to a family-friendly and attractive landscape zoo. It houses more than 1200 exotic and native animals from 250 species. The emphasis is on keeping South American animal species like anteaters, lowland tapirs, capybaras and maned wolves. This tradition is being continued with the rain forest house, which opened in August 1998. Small anteaters, sloths and white-faced sakis live here in the 1100m² large 'rain forest'. New species are also being presented in natural designed enclosures. Nectar feeding leaf-nosed bats, a colony of leaf-cutter ants, anacondas, basiliscus and paleosuchus. Nearly 400 different plant species are at home in the rain forest house as well as numerous butterflies, which accompany the visitor flying freely.
