In 1886 the Yellow Tower was erected on the 'pointed hat', a part of the Galgenberg mountain range, in the southeast of Hildesheim. The erection was the ending of the reforestation of the Galgenberg mountain range. its name derives from the used material - yellow bricks were used.

Since then it served walkers as popular destination and viewing tower.

After many years of usage the tower became derelict and the entrance was locked. The Hildesheim building administration wanted to pull down the tower completely lead to the founding of a citizen's initiative - saving the yellow tower - in 1996.

Money donations by Hildeshein citizens and companies mad an extensive tower redevelopment possible. In addition a metal observatory was constructed on the tower, which can be seen from afar.

Since spring 1999 the observatory can be visited regularly under the management of the adult education Hildesheim. The largest reflecting telescope in southern Lower Saxony allows fascinating insights into the starry sky.
