Witch staircase in Achim

image author: Stadt Achim

Hexentreppe, 28832 Achim

The 'witch staircase' used to be a church path, which lead from the church to the 'upper' farmers' quarter. In the past an old Lower Saxon thatched farmhouse stood at the foot of the staircase. At that time when you walked past the house you would often greeted by a long drawn-out 'Iaaa! Iaa!'. This screeching came from a donkey, apparently an offspring from the donkey of the Bremen town musicians.
