Liepe is also one of those seven islands once founded on the Havelland and was probably overgrown with lime trees. The village was first mentioned when the cathedral chapter of Brandenburg claimed Liepe. But the people of Bredow knew how to protect their property and had the rights to the village confirmed several times.
The village suffered often devastating fires, as in 1704 when half of the village burned down and two fires in 1872 destroyed inside of three days nearly the whole village. Liepe was until the 18th-century surrounded by water. It was then the habitat of Brent geese and herons. With the draining of the Luch meadows snipes, bustard, peewit and storks settled here.
