Verden from 1618/48 to 1938

1618/48
The 30-Year War brought great suffering upon Verden. Several houses were either burned or pulled down in both towns as their owners had fled. Only in 1626 when Till's troops occupied the local area Verden was drawn into bellicose happenings. In the course Danish, imperial and Swedish troops followed.

1648
Due to the Peace of Westphalia the archbishopric Bremen without the city of Bremen and the bishopric Verden as duchies Bremen and Verden, under the withdrawal of the cathedral chapter and other clerical councils (secularisation), as imperial feud to the Swedish crown.

1649
Christina, queen of Sweden forbid the council of the town Verden the continuation of the witch trails, which had caused so many victims roughly since 1517.

1651
The Süderstadt - the cathedral town - received the town privileges and became independent.

1667
On the order of the Swedish queen two Verden town part were joint. The separation wall is pulled down.

1780
The town started to separate from the four town gates and the city wall; only after 1800 expanded the city beyond the city wall.

1834
Near the Brunnenweg a Jewish cemetery was set up. Before burials took place in Hoyerhagen.

1856
A Catholic community is founded in Verden.

1858
Inauguration of the synagogue at the Johanniswall.

1891
First horse races on Maulohe's grassland.

1903/05
Redevelopment and extension of the town hall as well as construction of a tower.

1930
First 10-day riding and driving tournament in the new stadium.

1933
Setting up of race track around the stadium.
The North-bridge is being completed as the town's second bridge.

Building of the Sachsenhain

1938
On the 10th of November in the early hours of the morning in the night of broken glass the synagogue at the Johanniswall was destroyed.
