Time tunnel Wuelfrath

image author: Marion Münzberg

The time tunnel in Wülfrath (Bochumer Bruch) is 160 metres long and takes the visitor on a time travel, starting 400 million years ago to the present. The different geological eras are being vividly depicted and the visitor can view fossils and the first human finds.

Noises, colours, film clips and take-part-stations turn this exhibition into a great experience also for children.

At the end of the tunnel one reaches platform, which has been set up high above the former quarry. Years ago it filled with ground water and is now a new habitat for birds and fish. From here one can admire the breathtaking nature background and gets an impression of the massive chalk mining, which took place for many years.

The Wülfrather chalk is a Devonian compact limestone. Roughly 400 million years ago Wülfrath was located in the Devon in the sea and the ocean floor was populated by corals and other chalk forming creatures. From those skeletons the present limestone originated.
