The Spreewald is one of the loveliest areas in Brandenburg

The Spreewald is formed by numerous canals (or water-courses). These transverse through a swathe of land, ca 70km south-east of Berlin with a width of 15km and a length of 75km.
Sorbs live in the area of the Spreewald. The people of this Slavic tribe still keep up their own language and culture. The museum village Lehde documents vividly the way of life.

The Spreewald is often compared to Venice. Theodor Fontane travelled the Spreewald several times and has left many lovely descriptions of his walks through the Mark Brandenburg. In the past centuries the Spreewald has been a very poor area especially after the 'Germanic taking''. But the people who lived here have been spared rigour and disturbances as the Spreewald wasn't favourably situated as in regards to traffic facilities (and still is). Many of the little villages can only be reached by boat.

The charm of the Spreewald for tourism was already discovered in the past century. Many people came here to find peace and relaxation as it was in easy reach of Berlin. When you want to visit the Spreewald you really have to make a boat's trip. Because this unique landscape is best appreciated when travelling by boat. You can also start your boats trip from any other village.

The Spreewald has become famous in Germany not only for its pretty countryside but also the agricultural produce and specialities. Many places offer pickled cucumbers, sauerkraut, horseradish and other delicacies for sale or tasting.

Should you visit a restaurant you'll have to try a local fish dish. You will be surprised that the first-class preparation is not the privilege of the coastal regions.
