The sheep, in Latin Ovis, came around 4.000 years ago, then, already a domestic animal from south east Asia over Persia and Mesopotamia to Europe. In the bible, lambs are the most frequent sacrifices. Thus the sheep became the dominating motif in Christian art. You will find it for instance, in the Gardinger city arms, created in imitation of the Isenheimer altar by Mathis Grünewald (1460-1528).
How long the sheep have been at home at the North Friesian coasts is not known. One can assume for sure, that they always have been part of the livestock.
For hundred of years, the sheep has been an important part of the region and dike care. The visitors receive a comprehensive insight into the meaning of sheep husbandry for Schleswig-Holstein and the people who live here, during the lamb days.
