The history of Senftenberg - Peickwitz

Village life was dominate

In the year 1455 the settlement appeared under the name of Pykicz for the first time. The village near the Schwarze Elster was a tenure of the manorial system Ruhland/Guteborn. Between 1825 and 1946 the population increased from 223 to 752. As in many other places in the region Sorbs lived in the village. Their influence was so strong that the Sorbian language was also spoken by many German citizens. Many estates were built in Sorbian style that means the house gables point towards the road. Until the present the village can be recognised as Straßenangerdorf (village were the village green is situated between the row of houses and not only in the village centre).

With the incipient industrialisation the agricultural dominated village changed increasingly into the residential parish for industry workers. Up to this time peat cutting and wood making in the stately grounds was a sparse additional income for the families with many children. The peat was sold up to Dresden. With the exploitation of glass sand pits in Hosena and Hohenbocka new and better income options opened up for the Peickwitzer citizens.

Village life changed increasingly. Farmer's sons went into factories and helped out on the paternal fields after their work. After 1945 agriculture regained importance. In 1981  larges milk production plant was built in the district Senftenberg. Apart from animal husbandry domestic cropping became also a line of business for the by now three agricultural businesses. And in future agriculture is to play an important role in village development. Since 1993 there is the agricultural enterprise Domin, which also has a farmshop and affiliated slaughterhouse. Home produced beef of suckler cow husbandry as well as home slaughter meat is being sold.

The crowing cock of Peickwitz

In the Peickwitzhut is a cock made of clay, which crows towards east.
Why is it there? It remembers yonder cock, which lured the Peickwitz people to this place. The original village location was according to tradition half hour walk in eastern direction. Said cock's crowing was understood as,
'Come here!' And so the village was then
erected at this place.

Peickwitz today

With further development of cycle and hiking paths, creation of holiday apartments as well as designation of a nature resort the existing tourism potential is to be developed even better. Peickwitz is a rural village of the town Senftenberg and situated ca. 20 minutes walk from the 'Senftenberger Lake'. The target by taking on agrarian structural pre-planning and continuous investments as well as citizen involvement is to improve the village's appearance for tourists. The area in the village centre was upgraded in the years 1992 to 1993. Special care was taken to preserve the large green areas. These green spaces located in front of residential houses and are being cared for by the citizens with great effort. The surrounding agricultural areas are being kept in culture by the three agricultural businesses. In the following years the static fire tank redevelopment to a village pond is planned. Thereby enhancing the  village entrance. The pond also gives name to the annually pond festival, which takes place on the 2nd September weekend. Popular with tourists and mushroom pickers is the cycle and hiking path net, which leads into the wooded environ as well as the nature resort 'Peickwitzer Ponds'.
