In the Middle Ages the museum building was the Stadthof of the monastery Möllenbeck and from 1651 to 1866 seat of the Schaumburg government.

Today the museum houses the exhibition of the Schaumburger land history, which newly opened in the year 2000. It is situated in Rinteln's city centre.

Starting with prehistory and early history from which the visitor walks up a time shaft through humankind epochs to the Middle Ages the visitor are given insights into the different facets of city and country life.
An interactive city model and diverse exhibits explain the city development and the special events in an easy way.

The 17th and 18th-century history of the university Rinteln is being depicted with its everyday lectures as well as the importance of the Weser for the city.
The in Rinteln conducted witch trails form a theme focus. Visitors are able to become witnesses in listening stations of a trail conducted in the year 1654 and get to know the pre-modern justice between superstition, fanaticism and fairness.
