The Chalk Mountain

image author: city-map Lüneburg

Not only a graphic example of 220 million years of earth history but also for more than 2000 years cultural history in Northern Germany.

That is the Chalk Mountain in Lüneburg. This mountain "carried" once the castles of the proud Princes of Saxony. Due to the centuries of chalk depletion with its chalk ovens the mountain is a unique industrial monument. Unfortunately the mountain shrank to just about a sixteenth part of its former size.

Since 1932 it is a nature protection area, one of the oldest in Germany and a jewel for nature lovers. More than 300 different kinds of plants, whereof more than 50 red listed kinds of plants can be found here.

Du to the special geological conditions you find plants which cannot be found within a radius of many hundreds of kilometres.
Also bats, newts, rare butterflies and interesting birds have made this mountain their home - right in the middle of this city.
