Worth a special mention is the fact, that one used here sandstone elements for a monastery construction for the first time. Well worth seeing are the many brick buildings inside the monastery complex.

The monastery was founded by Benedictines around 1220. But, in 1237, the monk monastery was converted into a Benedictine convent.
Soon, the convent gained prestige and wealth. This phase was held for a long time, in opposition to other convents at that time.

In 1572, the convent became an endowment for aristocratic ladies. It had been donated 'For the Christian education of domestic Virgins'. The wealth of the convent allowed the ladies to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.
The nearly 800 years of existence have left their mark at the Dobbertin convent.
