Romanesque tower, middle gate, Meer tower

Romanesque tower

In the building complex of the Marien school, a girls' school, is a Romanesque tower integrated. In the early days it was the northwestern corner tower of the medieval bishop's castle.

Middle gate

The middle gate was built in 1392. It connected the monastery immunity via a parapet walk with the town's fortification. The town was divided into 2 parts by the middle gate:

  • the south, which belonged to the Cologne archbishop and
  • the north, which belonged to the Duke of Kleve.

The whole town fell to the Duke of Kleve in 1444. the middle gate was completely destroyed in 1945. In 1978 it was rebuilt with the parapet walk to the Meer tower.

Meer tower

The square Meer tower was built as part of the town fortifications at the end of the 14th-century. The name stems from the description maar, which stood for wetlands. The picture shows the Meer tower with the parapet walk and the middle gate in the background.
