The Platz Am Sande (place on the sands) was unpaved, thus sandy in the Middle Ages. Merchants parked their horse-drawn vehicles and ox carts here and bought and sold their wares, for example salt. The most impressive gabled houses of various types are lined up here at the place. The characteristics of the famous stair and snail gables become here especially clear. The special atmosphere of this place, flanked by the St. Johannis church at the eastern side and the industry and trade chambers at the western side are used again and again for numerous town festivals.
