The solar-heated open-air pool, which was renovated in 38 weeks has nothing more to do with a classic public swimming baths. Apart from the 25-metres swimming pool with 6 lanes and a diving tower there is also a non-swimmers pool with fun area and wide-lane slide and other water attractions. In addition the just renovated castle bath entices with its large toddler water area and next-door baby changing incl WC. A beach volleyball facility has been integrated into the sunbathing lawn.
The in 1964 inaugurated Langwedel swimming pool is situated on historical ground hence the name 'Burgbad Langwedel' (castle pool). Here since around 1222, on the 'Großen Schlossberg', were the main facilities of a border castle and residence of the archbishops of Bremen, the archbishop Gerhard II. in Langwedel built.
In the course of the centuries this important castle was originally built as a 'moated castle' and has been constantly extended to a palace. After the Thirty-Year War in 1648 the castle fell to Sweden and was changed to a fortified castle. In the year 1675 Münster soldiers have apparently 'razed' the castle. But according to certified written records this is not correct. Around the year 1770 the fortification facilities were still depicted in a Kur-Hanover map. The castle was probably destroyed from 1866 onwards, when the facility went to the Prussian kings.
In the course of the renovation work at the open-air pool (2006/2007) hidden ruins of the early facility were found beneath the surface and by the district archaeology recorded systematically. During this time the market town Langwedel designed an 'archaeological window' in the entrance area of the Burgbad. Visible is the part of the brick foundation of the mighty gate facility through one was able to reach the inner courtyard via the wide moat.
