Old School Warmhoern

The Old School in Warmhörn houses a museum of a special kind….

The country school was built in the then modern English style in 1874. It is a brick building with the original roof made of red slate. The house was built on top of cobblestones and hasn't got in the present sense a foundation, it stands on sand. This sand was not available locally and has probably been taken from the coastal sandbanks as many shells are found in the sand. Today, the building is listed. Already from the outside one can see that this is separated into a two-wings. Left of the main entrance is the teacher's flat, on the right, the classroom. It could and still can be reached via the schoolyard. The teacher could of course enter the classroom from his flat.

Accessible are the classroom, the stable-(annexe) and the schoolyard. The school garden is still under reconstruction. In the classroom is the collection. School bench and blackboard, satchel and bell and an authentic collection of teacher and learning material has been collected. Get a picture about the school day in this school… The collection starts around 1900 and shows pieces up to the school closure in 1970. Once a week we show a short Super8 film from the 50ties, it was filmed on the occasion of a school fete at our school.

The schoolyard houses the biggest day lily collection in SH. It flowers in Warmhörn every day a little bit more from the middle of June onwards. More than 80 varieties show around 30.000 blooms in three months. Every flower blooms only for a day, which means in the main flowering month of July, a new garden picture every day. Was the yard, very colourful as a rainbow yesterday, today, it might red or yellow tomorrow. Once a week, one can wander through the world of day lilies with Dipl. Biologist Tamara Binder. Dates and current information are available on www.cafealteschule.de

The stable annexe was used for horse and cart or also cow and pig on the one hand and on the other the school toilets were houses there – today the are still the sanitary facilities but a bit more modern. The schoolyard was also the 'gym', there were several pieces of equipment – all in the open air. Unfortunately these things have long gone. The school garden was used to feed the teacher family but also for object lessons in the subject biology and agriculture. Normally the Warmhörner teacher kept bees to pollinate the fruit trees in spring.
