Since 1986 is the equipment of the Sternfreunde Langwedel (star friends), secured by four folding roof construction, situated on the roof of the school at the Goldbach. Supported by community and school management Heinz and Hanna Struckmann and some star friends were able to setup an efficient amateur observatory, which was able to participate in the past on diverse professional research projects (e.g. cooperation with the Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomie (meteorites) and the university Bremen (high atmosphere). Further highlights were analysis for the exploration of atmosphere of the Saturn moon Titan, the documentation of the passage of the asteroid Toutatis, the watching of the Mars opposition in 2003. As well as the introduction of computer supported telescope controls. Well known beyond Langwedel region were the North German meetings of amateur astronomers, which meant a lot of preparation work before and after the event.

In the focus of current work are the visual and photographic observation of the universe and the transmitting of astronomical basic information in the public.
Regelmäßige Beobachtungsberichte in den Olbers-Nachrichten, Volkshochschulkurse, alljährlich Astro-Arbeitsgemeinschaften in der Schule, öffentliche Beobachtungen, Vorführungen und Besichtigungen in Kleingruppen sind mittlerweile ebenso selbstverständlich wie die Präsentation der Bildtafeln im Rathaus Langwedel.

Trotz der Aufhellung des Nachthimmels durch künstliche Lichtquellen werden in der Sternwarte beeindruckende Beobachtungstiefen erreicht; manche der fotografierten Objekte sind etliche hundert Millionen Lichtjahre entfernt. Dies ist nur durch den Einsatz leistungsfähiger Optiken und moderner Bildgewinnungstechniken wie Slow-Scan CCD-Kameras möglich.
