In front of the passage towards the cathedral is the Norbert Fountain situated.
The saint, on a high pillar, keeps watch over the marketplace.
According to the legend Norbert, son of the Earl von Gennep, was hit by lightning and turned like the proverbial Saulus to Paulus. As a canon he lived a life befitting his social status thus a very comfortable life. Then after the ordination to a priest he lived as an austere recluse and itinerant preacher.
The strict Premonstratesian order was founded by him in the French Prémontre in 1120.
Since 2006 a relict of the holy Norbert is situated in the cathedral sacrament chapel in the Norbert shrine.
The Renaissance-House from the year 1634, the summerhouse of the canon das Kaspar von Ulft, were destroyed in the 2nd World War.
The conserved bay of the house, made with natural stones makes one wonder about the house's past glory.
Today the bay is situated at the simple facade of the cathedral's music school.
In close proximity to the cathedral is the Michael chapel situated.
The Michael's gate connected the secular town with the ecclesiastical district of the canons, the so-called cathedral close. It was under sole ecclesiastical jurisdiction's control.
The gate stems from the year 1080. It was from 1472-78 built over with the chapel, which is dedicated to the archangel Michael. The cell of the holy Norbert is situated on the ground floor of the Dionysius chapel.
Today the chapel is used as concert and lecture hall as well as for events by the provost community.
