The New Synagogue, designed by Eduard Knoblauch and completed by August Stüler was built in the Moorish-Byzantine style, was the church of Germany's largest Jewish community. At the inauguration on the 5th September 1866, the Prussian king was also present in the main praying room, which offers space for 3000 people. During the "Night of the Broken Glass" on the 09th November 1938 the synagogue was plundered and desecrated by the national socialists. The building burnt down completely during an air raid in 1943. After years of restorations the facade with a gold shining 50m high cupola was completed in 1991. The Centre Judaicum includes the New Synagogue as a church, memorials, a scientific centre for coordination, research and publishing scientific and cultural services, the library and the archive of the Jewish community.
